Smoking Cigarettes is more than a habit, it’s an addiction. It holds the top spot for the leading cause of death in America and also the most preventable cause of death. Smoking in public places is hazardous for the smoker, as well as the people and the environment around them. Some believes smoking shouldn’t be banned in public places because it’s a free country and they have the right do as they feel. Many feel that people should have that right to a certain extent. They feel that people should have the right to do as they feel as long as it doesn’t affect some else’s life. A smoker's selfish choice to smoke in public should not affect the health of others; therefore smoking should be banned in public places.

Smoking in public places should be banned because cigarettes consist of many addicting drugs, such as nicotine and tobacco. To add, the smoke from the cigarettes contains over 4000 harmful chemicals, so if a non-smoker is to inhale that smoke regularly, it may lead them to diseases, such as lung cancer or heart attack. Non-smokers feel smoking should be banned because it is destructive to their health but smokers believe that it is up to them to take any drug they want because it’s their right and if someone else’s health is somehow affected, they stay away from them.

Smoking in public places can manipulate the minds of our children and teenagers. It may encourage them to smoke because they like to conform to what they see. Most of the time, teenagers are exposed to smoking in high schools, where many of my peers were exposed. They see their companions smoking in front of the school and see that they get all the attention. They think that it’s cool to smoke, so eventually they start smoking to get attention. Various times kids are also exposed to smoking by their parents. It has been proved that if children see their parents smoking, their risk factor for smoking later in their life increases. Children who inhale smoke often can suffer from asthma. If smoking in public places is banned, our children would grow up in a society where they know that smoking isn’t socially accepted.

Another reason why smoking should be banned in public place is because it’s simply inconsiderate for the smoker to smoke in front of non-smokers. If pregnant women are exposed to the cigarettes smoke, it negatively impacts the pregnant women and the unborn child. Smoking not only affects our environment by polluting the air but cigarettes also leave litter in our environment, cigarettes butts. You can find cigarettes butts on the sidewalk, highways, beaches and many other countless places. It costs the government millions of dollars to keep these places clean. If smoking is banned in public places, it will help the environment from further destruction and keep it clean, to add the government can save extra money and spend on something more useful.

If smoking was banned in public places, it may encourage and force smokers to smoke less or even give up. The smokers urge to smoke will decrease because they won’t see anyone around them smoking. It will put pressure on the smoker and the smoker will learn to control on smoking. Many disagree because they feel that if smoking is banned in public places, people will generally smoke indoors, which will harm their siblings. Smoking is usually viewed as a social activity for smokers. They think smoking helps them to relax and improves their concentration and confidence. If smoking is banned it would no longer be publicized as a social activity but it might affect the smoker’s way to think. They might lack concentration that they used to get when they were smoking.

Cigarettes are expensive to buy for many people, but they still buy it. They cut back on other expenses, such as grocery. If smoking is banned it will affect the cigarette industry and the government drastically. The government charges so much tax on cigarettes and get millions of dollars yearly from it but the government also pays millions of dollars on health insurance. If smoking is banned in public places, it will decrease the amount for people getting disease and sick, which might lower the demand for health care.

Smoking Cigarettes should be banned in public places because it affects our society through nonconstructive health risks. If smoking is banned, it will help people feel more healthy and alive. This law should be strictly enforced by the government because the government should want the best for its people.
